A Goban Revitalized

So several years ago I bought this “well-loved” go board at a local Japanese grocery. Unfortunately, its dark finish did not provide enough contrast with the black stones, and as such, I did not end up using it much.

But with the turn of the new year and the inspiration of this post, I dove in.

A decent bit of sandpaper, a lot of time, some wood conditioner, a touch of stain, a dash of clear coat – and out pops a new goban! When it came to the lines (*shudder*), I must admit I “cheated”. I drew a board in autoCAD and (mis)used the resources at work to have its negative cut out of vinyl. I then applied the negative of the board as a single piece. I took a fine point Sharpie and filled in the gaps. Peeling back the vinyl revealed a tiny amount of bleed. But from one or two feet away the lines are plenty sharp.

I didn’t dare attempt the legs.  But they are a nice reminder of the board as it original came into my life.  ^_^
